// HOME WASTEWATER TREATMENT FOR THE SUNSHINE COAST & NOOSA HINTERLAND
Choosing a wastewater system for your Sunshine Coast acreage.
Whether you’re building a new home in the Noosa Hinterland, replacing an ageing septic system or creating your dream lifestyle property, choosing the right onsite wastewater treatment system is an important part of the planning process.
Every property is different. Whether it’s sandy coastal soils, the gently sloping hinterland blocks or larger rural acreage, the right system starts with an independent Site and Soil Evaluation (SSE). That assessment determines the most suitable wastewater solution for your land and Sunshine Coast Council requirements.
For many Sunshine Coast homeowners, it’s about more than simply meeting today’s approval standards. It’s about choosing a quiet, low-maintenance passive, gravity-fed aerobic sand filtration wastewater treatment system that’s designed to blend into acreage living while delivering reliable long-term performance.
// HOW THE ECOSAFE SYSTEM WORKS
A simple wastewater system, engineered for long-term reliability.
Unlike many aerated systems, Ecosafe’s passive, gravity-fed aerobic sand filter treats household wastewater without continuously running air blowers. Wastewater first enters a primary settling chamber before flowing through a biological sand filter, where naturally occurring microorganisms treat the water. The treated water is then stored and pumped to the approved land application area when required.
By keeping the treatment process simple, Ecosafe reduces mechanical complexity while delivering reliable, energy-efficient performance that’s independently tested and approved for Queensland conditions. It’s a practical solution for rural homes, acreage properties and homeowners looking for dependable long-term wastewater treatment
Built for Sunshine Coast acreage living.
Designed for Acreage Living
Many Sunshine Coast acreage properties rely on onsite wastewater treatment. Ecosafe’s passive, gravity-fed design is well suited to larger lifestyle blocks, rural homes and long-term, low-maintenance living.
Quiet, No-Odour Operation
Without continuously running air blowers, Ecosafe operates quietly in the background. When properly installed and maintained, it’s designed to operate without unpleasant odours around your home.
Lower Lifetime Ownership Costs
With one recommended annual service and fewer mechanical components to maintain, Ecosafe helps reduce ongoing servicing, energy use and long-term ownership costs.
Designed for Everyday Reliability
Without above-ground blower units or controller boxes, Ecosafe keeps exposed equipment to a minimum while providing added resilience during temporary power outages.
// REAL INSTALLATIONS. REAL PROPERTIES.
Designed for the Noosa Hinterland, not just suburban blocks.
From coastal lifestyle blocks to the rolling hills of the Noosa Hinterland, we’ve installed Ecosafe wastewater treatment systems across a wide range of Sunshine Coast properties. Every installation reflects the land it’s built for, not a standard layout repeated from site to site.
Whether access is tight, the block is sloping or the home sits on larger rural acreage, our passive, gravity-fed aerobic sand filtration system is designed to become part of the property with minimal visual impact and dependable long-term performance.
For many Sunshine Coast homeowners, that’s exactly what they’re looking for—a wastewater treatment system that’s designed to work reliably in the background, so they can simply enjoy their property.
Building your dream home in the Noosa Hinterland?
If you’re building on an unsewered property, your onsite wastewater treatment system is one of the first long-term decisions you’ll make. Getting it right from the beginning means choosing a solution that’s suited to your land, your household and Sunshine Coast Council requirements
Need to replace an ageing septic system on your property?
If you are having difficulty managing your existing septic tank, or it is giving off bad smells or simply not suitable for your household any longer, replacing it can be an opportunity to upgrade to a quieter, lower maintenance wastewater treatment system.
Passive wastewater treatment vs aerated systems
Choosing an onsite wastewater treatment system isn’t just about installation day. The way a system operates affects servicing, energy use, noise and long-term ownership costs for years to come.

// COUNCIL & APPROVAL EXPERTISE
Designed to meet Sunshine Coast Council requirements.
Every unsewered property on the Sunshine Coast requires an approved onsite wastewater design before installation can begin.
Ecosafe works alongside independent Site and Soil Evaluators, wastewater designers and builders to ensure every wastewater treatment system is matched to your property’s soil conditions, land characteristics and Sunshine Coast Council requirements before installation.
From the Noosa Hinterland’s sloping acreage to coastal lifestyle properties and larger rural blocks, every site presents different challenges. That’s why every Ecosafe installation begins with an approved design that’s tailored to your property.
// PROVEN THROUGH INDEPENDENT TESTING
See the results for yourself.
One of the simplest ways to understand how an on-site wastewater treatment system (OWTS) is performing is by looking at the quality of the treated water.
Ecosafe’s gravity-fed treatment process consistently produces clear, treated water while helping reduce odours and ongoing maintenance.
Our independently verified test results demonstrate compliance with Australian standards, giving homeowners confidence in the long-term performance of their Home Sewage Treatment Plant (HSTP).
Your Sunshine Coast project, step by step
Site & soil assessment
An independent Site and Soil Evaluator (SSE) assesses your property’s soils, slope and site conditions to determine the most suitable onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) and land application area.
Design & Council approval
Using the site assessment, an approved wastewater design is prepared to meet Sunshine Coast Council requirements and ensure your Ecosafe system is matched to your property.
Professional installation
Once your project is approved and scheduled, our experienced team typically installs your Ecosafe system in a single day, leaving your property tidy, ready for connection and built for years of reliable performance.
// FAQ
Wastewater questions we’re often asked across the Sunshine Coast
Can an Ecosafe system work with a solar-powered home?
Yes. Ecosafe’s treatment process is passive and gravity-fed, so it does not rely on air blowers operating around the clock. The final irrigation stage still uses a pump, but the lower mechanical dependence makes the system well suited to many solar-powered and energy-conscious acreage homes.
Is Ecosafe suitable for sloping Noosa Hinterland properties?
Many acreage properties have steep sections, limited access, dense vegetation or limited land application areas. The suitability of the system and location of the irrigation area is dependent upon the separate Site and Soil Evaluation and approved wastewater design.
What happens if the property is left unoccupied for a while?
The sand filter holds moisture which supports the treatment biology during periods of little or no household use. This can make Ecosafe particularly useful for properties that are vacant at times, such as second homes and hinterland retreats.
How often does an Ecosafe system need servicing?
Ecosafe recommends one annual service rather than the quarterly servicing commonly associated with many aerated systems. Owners should continue to follow the manufacturer’s specifications and the advice of their approved service agent.
Will an Ecosafe wastewater system smell?
When correctly installed, operated and maintained, Ecosafe is designed to help minimise unpleasant odours. The treatment system is sealed and does not use the continuously vented blower arrangement found in many aerated systems.
How clean is the treated water?
Testing by a NATA-approved laboratory reports typical Ecosafe results of less than 5 mg/L for five-day biochemical oxygen demand, less than 5 mg/L for suspended solids, and fewer than 1 faecal coliform per 100 mL. The corresponding published acceptable limits are 20 mg/L, 30 mg/L and 200 per 100 mL. Read more about the independent test results here.
